In Los Angeles, the Metropolitan Transit Authority will offer free rides on its buses and trains beginning at 9:00 PM on New Year’s Eve and lasting until 2:00 AM New Year’s Day.

The free pass includes rides on the Red, Purple, Blue, Gold and Green subway and light rail lines. Trains will run every 20 minutes for 24 hours from December 31st to January 1st and from January 1st to January 2nd.

Revelers in Orange County can also hitch a free ride, compliments of the Orange County Transporation Authority. Beginning at 6:00 PM on New Year’s Eve and lasting until 2:30 AM on New Year’s Day, the agency is offering free rides on all its buses.

For those planning on taking in Monday’s Rose Parade or Rose Bowl game, you’re also in luck: Metro is offering expanded overnight and early morning service on Sunday and Monday in hopes of encouraging people to avoid the traffic and parking crunch in Pasadena.

To help make that happen, Metro will run trains every seven to eight minutes on the Gold Line to Pasadena, beginning at 5:00 AM Monday morning.

Those attending the Rose Bowl game are urged to take the Gold Line to Memorial Park Station where shuttles will pick up fans beginning at 10:00 AM.

The Rose Parade begins at 8:00 AM on Monday morning, followed by the Rose Bowl Game at 2:00 PM.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
