LAist is an audience-funded nonprofit news organization that connects with people across Southern California on the radio, online, and in person. We deliver fact-based reporting that is useful, thoughtful, and deeply connected to our communities with clear context and next steps to understand SoCal, connect with it, and help change it.

Our internship program is designed to provide students and recent graduates — from all backgrounds, not just traditional pathways — with paid, hands-on experience working with our award-winning newsroom.

We are committed to showcasing the people and neighborhoods that make Greater L.A. work.

Which teams can interns work with?

Internship placements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Local radio shows (Morning Edition, All Things Considered)
  • Daily, enterprise, or watchdog news
  • On demand (podcasts)
  • Data reporting
  • Live programming and events
  • Marketing
  • Audience engagement (social media and newsletters)
  • Community engagement (connecting with communities)

What kind of work do interns do?

Our interns get hands-on experience across the organization. They report audio and digital stories, produce social videos, newsletters and posts, work on demand (podcasts), connect with community at events, work on marketing campaigns and more.

You can see examples of their work by scrolling to the bottom of this page.

In addition to their day-to-day work, interns will also be part of a cohort and attend a series of workshops focused on a range of topics and experiences to develop their skillsets ( e.g., writing for radio, how to use social media to share stories, how to improve your resume, etc.).

Interns are also paired with a staff buddy to help them navigate day-to-day life at LAist.

When do internships take place?

Our primary internship experience occurs in the summer. Internships can happen year-round as well, but that varies.

How long are internships?

We believe the ideal duration for an LAist internship is at least 10 weeks. But we strive to be flexible and open to discussion.

How do I apply?

Internship positions are posted on LAist’s jobs page and on APMG Careers, our parent company’s job posting site. Note: You might see other internship opportunities there, but make sure you are applying to LAist. It will be posted as Intern, LAist.

Where can I get more information about internships?

If you work at a college, we’re happy to connect to talk about internship opportunities at LAist. Reach out to the internship team at LAistInternships@laist.com with your inquiry.

For anyone else who has questions, reach out to LAistInternships@laist.com for more information.

Projects from past interns

Here’s some examples of the work our interns have done.

Writing and producing local news

LAist interns get the chance to tell more stories for LAist.com and LAist 89.3 FM by reporting original LAist stories, republishing our partner content, and producing translated content of our stories, including guides.

Reported or produced by interns

Produce for social and newsletters

Interns have the opportunity to produce social content on their own or with our audience engagement team, from scripting, filming, editing to publishing, writing newsletters, and measuring metrics.

Engage with community members in person

Interns can be out in community at LAist-produced events around L.A. to speak with community members about issues, concerns, share our mission, and build connections.
