Nearly a month into stay-at-home orders that have required them to shut their dining rooms, restaurants are scrambling to stay afloat. To do that, some have become de facto grocery stores, selling dry goods, produce, toilet paper, masks and prepared meals that only need to be thrown in an oven.

Whatever you call them — bodegas, marketplaces, larders — this new wave of restaurants-turned-markets has changed the food landscape. But it hasn't happened without hiccups.

Bacari PDR, one of the first restaurants to start selling grocery items alongside prepared food, was cited in late March by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health for lacking proper certification and ordered to close. (Businesses need different permits to sell prepared food than they do to sell groceries.)

The restaurant community rallied and met with officials. New guidelines allowing restaurants to sell grocery items went into effect on April 2. Since then, dozens more Los Angeles restaurants have become markets. They sell flour by the pound, grains, beans, pasta, canned goods and a bevvy of items from basic staples to fancy foodstuffs. It's one way to turn all those unused lemons into lemonade.

We've highlighted a handful of restaurants, organized by neighborhood, currently offering grocery and pantry items on their delivery and take-out menus.

Please note: Things can change quickly. Be sure to look at the restaurant's website or social media to see what's on offer right now.

What a time it is... There are a million emotions that we are all feeling as we are human after all. . So we do what we do best, and keep going. This whole situation is bringing out our deepest fears, greatest memories and joys, etc. It's also giving us some time to slow down and rediscover ourselves (at least for some of us; for the heroes on the frontlines who are busier than ever - we'll all do our part to support, no matter how small or large). . Our Roast Chicken Dinner is a deeply personal take on comfort food, an expression of our emotions during this trying time. Growing up in the SGV, Maggie and I loved eating hainan chicken rice (looking at you, Savoy). . It's pure comfort, done our way: We use @gonestraw_farms excellent, all natural, antibiotic/hormone free, humanely raised, never frozen chickens. In fact, we roast the chickens for this dish because we think the @gonestraw_farms birds taste better that way (compared to traditional poaching). We use as much Farmers Market produce as we can, featuring Hier Cheemeng Farms, Yao Cheng Farms and more (not all plant based foods are created equal, especially when it comes to flavor and environmental impact). We make all the sides and condiments from scratch. . Yes, it's more expensive than hainan chicken rice at most other restaurants, and there's no way we can make it cost any less. We just hope you can try it out with an open mind and an open heart. . Such as with our food and the current situation - the past may be forever gone, a mere memory, but we keep marching forward. Thank you to everybody who has supported us since day one, and stay safe everybody 💛. . Chicken Dinners are available by pre-order only through our online ordering (check link in bio or website).
