The Netflix series Lady Dynamite stars comedian Maria Bamford as, well, a version of herself. Loosely based on her life, the show takes place after Bamford’s return to L.A. from a rehab facility for her bipolar disorder.

To help build the musical landscape of the show, co-creator Mitchell Hurwitz called on composer David Schwartz. The two have worked together in the past, most notably on Hurwitz’s show, Arrested Development.

Frame producer Michelle Lanz recently trekked out to Schwartz’s studio to learn more about the wacky music behind Lady Dynamite.
