Composer Julia Adolphe turns city sounds into a symphonic poem

Julia Adolphe is a Los Angeles-based composer who, at just 28 years of age, is making waves in the classical music world.

Adolphe, who's been described as a "bona fide phenom," is currently finishing her doctorate at USC’s Thornton School of Music. But she’s already had two orchestral works performed by the New York Philharmonic. Adolphe says:

When I start writing a piece I really try to have an emotional narrative behind it, or a story or an image. And I try to make sure that I have a direct emotional connection to whatever I'm writing.

Now, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra has commissioned a piece from her, which is titled “Shiver and Bloom.” Ahead of its premiere this weekend, she stopped by The Frame to discuss where she finds inspiration and her compositional process.

The world premiere of "Shiver and Bloom" will be March 18 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale.
