The Take Two Comment Box for Oct. 3
Now it's time to dip into the Comment Box, our weekly chance to hear what you have to say about the work we're doing.
Many listeners weighed in on our coverage of the government shutdown, or have written in with questions about the Affordable Care Act and California's healthcare exchange, Covered California, which went live this week.
There is a lot of frustration and confusion out there and we appreciate your letters and comments, and hope to keep bringing you the latest news and analysis on all of it.
To that end, if you're holding off on enrolling for health insurance or have a personal story to share about your experience with health care reform, email us at taketwoshow@kpcc.org
The one story that really caught your attention had nothing to do with health care or the shutdown. It was an interview we did with Jessica Blankenship of the magazine The Atlantic.
She had written about whether women should have the right to go topless, wherever and whenever. Listeners seemed to be split on this.
Here are a few examples of feedback from our website:
"Uhhh...people tend to forget how males and females are hard wired differently. Women and men are NOT the same. Most women look at topless men and think, meh, but men think of women's breasts as sexual. Period." -- theitalian
"Women who do not want to be gawked at would not go topless. It should be up to the individual woman whether she wants to be topless - not a patriarchal society to decide what is in her best interest." -- HM
Last week we ran an interview with journalist Evan Ratliff of The Atavist. One of his most recent stories, five years in the making, is called "The Oilman's Daughter."
It's about Judith Patterson, who discovered late in life that her biological father may have been a wealthy oil executive, named M.A. Wright. Evan tells of her quest to document her parentage:
"I had been looking for that perfect ending and I had been looking for the piece of evidence that would show OK she is the daughter or she's not. But you know, maybe that's the real truth here... that the real truth can't be uncovered in this particular case."
One of the listeners who called in was none other the Oilman's Daughter herself, Judith Patterson. She says that Evan's characterization of her situation isn't quite right:
After her adoption by another couple in Cherokee County was nullified, the official record there does show she is the daughter of M.A. Wright.
We always love to hear from you. So please write us an email and send it to taketwoshow@kpcc.org. Or you can just post something on our website at KPCC.org/taketwo. You can always find us on Twitter
