The real-life story of the first Pakistani woman to summit Mt. Everest

The village of Shimshal  is nestled high in the Himalayas.

It's one of the fifteen highest locations in the world, and one of the places to go if you want to climb to the summit of Mount Everest. Getting there means navigating a very thin road precariously carved into the side of a mountain.

Samina Baig was born and raised in Shimshal. At the age of 22, with the encouragement of her brother Mirza Ali, she became the first Pakistani woman to reach the summit of Everest. That despite the fact that women raised in proximity of Everest rarely ever make the attempt to climb the peak. 

Now, her story is the subject of a documentary film called "Beyond the Heights," directed by Jawad Sharif and produced by her brother Mirza:
