• "A Better Goodbye" by John Schulian is about a boxer who can't get passed the death of his opponent in the ring. "It's a savvy book about boxing, but it's also a sweet little love story, and as you might expect from a sports writer, it's just really gritty and smart," Kipen says.  
• "William Cameron Menzies: The Shape of Films to Come" by James Curtis tells the life story of the man who invented production design. "He's the guy we have to thank for the Burning of Atlanta in 'Gone With the Wind,'" Kipen says. "It's just so refreshing to have a biography of a film figure who's not an actor, who's not a director."
• "Thirsty: William Mulholland, California Water and the Real Chinatown" by Marc Weingarten isn't your typical Mulholland biography. "This is for somebody who doesn't want to spend three weeks with Mulholland, but wants to know the story," Kipen says.
