Pod of rare pilot whales spotted off California coast
Pilot whales haven't been seen off the coast of Southern California since 1996, but they're back. This past weekend, a pod of 50 pilot whales were spotted off the coast of Dana Point in Orange County.
A pilot whale with an injured nose rises out of the water as a pod of approximately 100 gather in Loch Carron on May 20, 2011 in South Uist, Scotland. A rescue operation is underway to prevent the whales from stranding themselves on the rocky shoreline of Loch Carron in the Western Isles.
