Mexican film seeing commercial as well as critical success

With the holiday awards season upon us, you're sure to be hearing more about the film Gravity, directed by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron.

Mexican filmmakers have come to prominence over the last decade with daring and exciting movies like Amores Perros, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Pan's Labyrinth and Children of Men.

But now, mainstream Mexican movies are making it big at the box office too. The class-clash comedy Nosotros Los Nobles broke box office records, bringing in 26 million dollars to become the most succesful Mexican film of all time. The fish-out-of-water baby comedy Instructions Not Included hit big in the U.S. and is poised to break records in Mexico as well.

On the flip side, smaller more challenging movies are making it to the top too. Mexican films have won the best director award at the Cannes film festival the last two years in a row.

Daniel Morales joins the show to discuss this new era of Mexican film. He is the director of Tapiz Media group and he has helped bring dozens of Mexican films north of the border through his work with film festivals like Hola Mexico and the Latino International Film Festival.
