Fight against Mexican drug cartel has deep roots in California
Armed civilians in Mexico have been fighting a powerful drug cartel and their efforts resonate deeply with hundreds of thousands of people in California, who have roots in the western Mexican state.
Apatzingán, Michoacán a 2 de marzo del 2014.- Durante la tarde de este domingo se reunieron alrededor de 400 personas para realizar la conformación del Consejo Ciudadano Central, en el que asistieron los 3 consejeros oficiales, José Manuel Mireles, Hipólito Mora, Estanislao Beltrán y el Padre Goyo,  en su primera reunión decidieron pedir la renuncia del presidente municipal y amagaron con tomar para mañana la presidencia de esta cabecera municipal. In Mexico, the federal government has given groups of armed civilians until this weekend to demobilize or join a new rural defense force. The militias have been fighting a powerful drug cartel and their efforts resonate deeply with hundreds of thousands of people in California, who have roots in the western Mexican state. 

It's a story we've been following closely on this program. Last month, we looked at ties between families in Los Angeles and Michoacan.
