Delta's meme-packed safety video and other airlines try to get your attention
Few people bother paying attention to the spiel on a flight about buckling your seatbelt and not smoking in flight.
But what if instead the airline played a video that featured all sorts of Internet celebrities, like the double rainbow guy, overly attached girlfriend and the banana from peanut butter jelly time?
Delta Airlines released a new in-flight video that already has 8.5 million views.
Delta is going to great lengths to communicate a message most of us already know. But actually, maybe we don't.
Barbara Peterson, senior aviation correspondent at Condé Nast Traveler, says the FAA has studied passenger awareness.
"We’ve actually become more ignorant about aviation safety in recent years," she says.
According to the FAA study, most people did not know that a passenger traveling with a child should don their oxygen mask, then assist the child. Also, the worst performance was from the most frequent fliers.
As glib as these videos may seem, Peterson says they're an attempt by the airlines to grab your attention so you'll be fully prepared in case of an unexpected emergency.
