Guest host Libby Denkmann and KPCC film critics Justin Chang, Christy Lemire and Charles Solomon review this week's most memorable releases.
“Baby Driver” (R)
JUSTIN: SEE IT
“It’s a really terrific action-thriller-car-chase musical like no other, and it shows just how talented, original and inventive [director] Edgar Wright is.”
CHRISTY: SEE IT
“This is a total blast. All the hype is worth it. It’s a beautiful mixture of a bunch of different genres with a great cast and a killer soundtrack.”
“Despicable Me 3” (PG)
CHARLES: MISS
“I don’t think anyone was crying out for yet another ‘Despicable Me’ movie, I know I wasn’t. This is why. It’s a lot of set ups that don’t pay off, and payoffs that aren’t set up. It’s just not fun.”
JUSTIN: MISS
“It’s really quite bad.”
CHRISTY: MEH
“My 7-year-old liked it. He likes Minions.”
“Okja” (Unrated)
JUSTIN: SEE IT
“I really liked this movie. It’s all over the place, but in a good way. It’s a children’s animal movie. It’s an eco-activist, animal rights fable and somehow it all just about coheres.”
CHRISTY: SEE IT
“Beautifully shot. Go see it on the biggest screen you can find, although it is indeed on Netflix, as well. A really ambitious mix of stuff going on here.”
CHARLES: MEH
“I am afraid the mix didn’t gel for me. The animation of the title character is quite interesting, some very tricky stuff is pulled off very nicely, but oh is Jake Gyllenhaal bad!”
“The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Photography” (R)
JUSTIN: SEE IT
“Not your typical Errol Morris film in that it’s very warm and celebratory. The photographer at the center is just absolutely charming and has a very accomplished body of work that is wonderful to see.”
CHRISTY: SEE IT
“Yes, [the photographer] is really disarming. She comes off as kind of unassuming, but she’s got wonderful stories to tell and a really important place in cultural history.”
