Caltech's Mark Davis has built custom-designed nanoparticles that deliver chemotherapy drugs to tumors in such a way that the adverse effects of the drugs on the rest of the body are minimized. These particles are being tested on patients at City of Hope in nearby Duarte, and are now in the planning stages for more extensive phase II trials. Davis began his work on nanoparticles at the request of his wife, who was being treated for breast cancer 10 years ago and suffering from the results of traditional chemotherapy. Dr. Davis joins Larry Mantle to talk about his research and the use nanotechnology to treat cancer.
