Coalition forces will meet the Republican Guard in battle soon. The Republican Guard is the cream of Saddam's ground forces, expanded during the Iran-Iraq War from a palace guard to a force of seven divisions. In addition to the Republican Guard, there is a separate force called the Special Republican Guard, tasked with protecting Saddam Hussein personally.
