More on the mummified babies
Investigators have identified the woman believed to be the owner of a steamer trunk that contained the mummified remains of a fetus and a newborn wrapped in newspaper from the 1930s. Jean M. Barrie is inscribed on the trunk, and a woman named Janet M. Barrie worked as a private nurse for a Los Angeles dentist. Barrie later married her former employer and there is no record of her having any children. Officials have not determined the cause of death of the babies, although DNA collected from the corpses will be compared to Barrie’s nieces and nephews. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck committed to continue the investigation, saying yesterday, “Justice, even when it’s delayed, is still justice.”
