Making Cable More Competitive

A bill proposed by Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez may soon take cable TV contracts out of the hands of local cities and put them into the hands of state regulators, at the same time allowing telephone providers to become cable providers. The goal is to make the cable television market more competitive by giving consumers more choices. This shift from local to state regulation is popular with cable and telecommunications providers, but local cities and some consumer advocates are expressing concern.
