Gardena High shooting raises questions about school security
Are our kids safe? The accidental discharge of a firearm in a student’s backpack yesterday at Gardena High School has parents worried for the safety of their children. A girl, whose skull was fractured by the shot, remains in critical condition. Another student was hit in the neck. Press reports indicate that the school failed to use a wand metal-detector to check students’ bags to guard against just such an incident. Are existing security protocols being successfully implemented? How common is it for students to carry firearms into public schools? Do parents feel their children are safe?
