Dr. Thomas Garthwaite Resigns

The embattled director of the Department of Health Services for LA County, Dr. Thomas Garthwaite, resigned. Dr. Garthwaite told the County Board of Supervisors in closed session on Tuesday that he has accepted a position as chief medical officer of Catholic Health East, Pennsylvania-based health system with 31 acute care hospitals from Maine to Miami. His decision comes after months of criticism for his proposed plan to stabilize the troubled King/Drew Medical Center by closing or reducing patient services in areas such as pediatrics, obstetrics and neonatology.
