Journalist and author Susan Jacoby joins Host Larry Mantle to discuss her new book Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism. Jacoby’s book discusses “freethinkers,” or secular thinkers, throughout American history, and how they have clashed with religious beliefs and institutions, creating the kind of “culture war” between the Left and the Right that we have today. Ironically, Jacoby writes that the separation of church and state outlined in the US Constitution is the very thing that has allowed religion to color public affairs in this country, unlike the civic societies of most Western countries.
