California public high schools had a 24.2 percent dropout rate in the 2006-07 school year, according to new figures released Wednesday by the state Department of Education. The dropout rate for Los Angeles Unified was almost 10% higher, at 33.6 percent. Dropout rates for black students in California were much higher than the average, at 41.3 percent. Dropout rates for white students, by contrast, were much lower than the average, at 15.2 percent.
