More LA spots to try
  • Feta fetishists and mozzarella maniacs, this could be your day! Go ahead, have a slice. Have two. Have a whole dang pie. It's National Cheese Pizza Day, and you don't need to fight for your right to partake in all its gooey goodness.
  • Silver Lake hipsters are now going to have a new place to spend the change they put in their piggy banks after taking their glut of PBR cans to the recycling depot. The vacated Circuit City at 4400 W. Sunset is going to become a Whole Foods.
  • If you're in town this weekend and hungry for some fun, there are two days left in the four-day bonanza food and drink event called The Taste. Merging two of last year's big food events, the long weekend of chefs, eat, drink, demos, panels, and live music is actually several events taking place in three locations around town.
  • Burger (and fast food) lovers, you have spoken, and your favorite "quick-service restaurant" for a second year in a row is Five Guys Burgers and Fries. The east coast-based burger chain bested SoCal's In-N-Out, who ranked second overall on the consumer survey conducted by Market Force.
  • If you've been to the Thursday night seasonal Farmers' Market up at Yamashiro in Hollywood, you've probably checked out Chef Brock Kleweno's tasty fusion tacos and salsas and guac. But the Market is closing up for the colder months. Luckily, you won't have to skip a beat--or a week--without your taco fix: Kleweno is opening his taco shop, Komida, in Hollywood.
  • After recently reading about all the superhero qualities of purslane, I knew I'd want to profile it and encourage everyone to eat this succulent annual that comes around every summer. Purslane is a leafy vegetable mostly sold in farmer's markets, though it is often considered a weed when found in gardens, due to its hardy qualities—but it's a beneficial weed, since it helps out neighboring plants. It's a great food to forage, since it's easily identifiable and rather prolific in the southern california landscape.
