More LA spots to try
  • Three area food spots--a cart, a truck, and a restaurant--have been named finalists for the 6th annual Libby Awards, given by the youth division of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The Libby Awards (short for "liberation") honor animal-friendly people and products.
  • As one of the most popular vegetarian proteins on the market, tofu is a common substitute for the holiday turkey. Angelenos eat tofu for many reasons, one often being the belief that this is better for the environment. Consider, though, that much of the soy used to make tofu is genetically engineered, also known as genetically modified.
  • Have you done your holiday shopping yet? You may want to set aside some time and money to support local artisans who are making some of Los Angeles' most delicious edibles at the Artisanal LA Holiday Pop-Up Shop.
  • Heads up Studio City and Santa Monica, you're about to get more burgers! Stout, the burger restaurant that opened up two years ago in Hollywood's now burger-loaded Cahuenga Corridor, is prepping a second location in Studio City, to be followed by a third in Santa Monica.
  • Pomegranate is a fruit rich in history, having ancient origins in modern day Iran and the Caucasus. It is cultivated all over north Africa, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Asia. In many cultures, the juice of the individual arils is separated from the seeds and processed into grenadine and pomegranate molasses as intense flavoring agents.
  • Do you want to see genetically engineered foods labeled? Help get the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act of 2012 ballot initiative passed and attend a local training meeting this week.
