More LA spots to try
  • Last night, Lake Street Creamery surprised their fans with a sad announcement: They're shutting down. The mobile ice cream parlour that launched almost two years ago served up some of the tastiest scoops in town.
  • Fans of Lou, the unassuming wine bar tucked into a strip mall at the corner of Melrose and Vine, got the sad news yesterday via a blog post from owner Lou Amdur that he is closing up sometime in the next few weeks.
  • This doesn't happen too often: A once-prominent chain restaurant that's been closing down locations in recent years is opening up a new location, taking over for an indie restaurant, in an indie-centric 'hood. Hamburger Hamlet is taking over the Avocado Grill space in Larchmont.
  • The L.A. Times has implemented some big changes in their Food section, including bundling it up with a bunch of other lifestyle-y sections and pushing it to Saturday, and hiring (Pulitzer Prize-winning) writer Jonathan Gold to spill some ink on the subject of eating in L.A. Now they've announced they're doing away with star ratings in their restaurant reviews.
  • Since the Sprinkles 24-hour cupcake automat opened for business on Tuesday, it has been insanely popular. At some points lines stretched halfway down the block, sometimes running 50 people deep—even when the bakery staffed by actual live humans was open.
  • Because Refinery29 thinks their 17 selections are! Their picks run the gamut, from the K-Town cozy classic The Prince, the take-it-off Jumbo's Clown Room, to the not-really-divey (aka c'mon, they don't belong in this list) like The Thirsty Crow and the more kitschy Tiki-Ti.
