Gilroy may have its Garlic Festival and Los Angeles may have lost its Tofu Festival (and let's not forget the upcoming Asparagus Festival in Stockon and Artichoke Festival in Castroville), but out in neighboring Ventura County, the California Strawberry Festival continues to rock on, bringing out hordes of people. This year, the sweet fête will take place on the third weekend of May and will, as always, include strawberry-infused foods of every kind: kabobs,...

Today at noon, the Farmlab Public Salon welcomes Van Zan Frater, the person behind the Jesus is My Homeboy image that graces a number of t-shirts these days. The inspiration for the image came from Frater’s terrifying brush with gang violence -- and it's not about cashing in on a kitschy image. In 2007, Frater started the Jesus is My Homeboy Foundation in LA, which provides assistance with burial expenses and grief counseling for...

Cars into Bicycles sounds a little like an eco-oriented Transformers, but it's less Optimus Prime and more performance workshop. Head over to Bergamot Station on Saturday at Noon, and at 11 a.m. for the following three Saturdays after that, to watch as German artists Folke Koebberling and Martin Kaltwasser, with the help of students from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena dismantle an old car and turn it into two fully-operational bicycles....

No, the insanely popular Sunset Junction Festival is not going away (dates for this year are slated for August 21st and 22nd), but Silver Lake will soon be home to two major festivals with the introduction of the Silver Lake Jubilee come this May. And by what's been announced so far, it's looking like a killer event. Although no line-up has been announced yet (companion monthly Wednesday night events called Serenade Sunset, however, do...

I love me some Los Angeles (born, bred, and back again), but one of the things I miss the most about my time in San Francisco is the traffic-stopping, bell-ringing, cyclist rights-asserting celebration that is Critical Mass. Sure, LA has their own regional chapters, but with the city spread out as it is, the full impact of our cyclist army isn't felt as heartily as in our sister city to the North. Until now,...

Salam Shalom The personal and the political are stuck with each other in actor-playwright Saleem’s 1996 Harvey Fierstein Award-winning Salam Shalom, now running in a new, substantially revised version at the Greenway Court Theater in West Hollywood. Thrown together as roommates in UCLA graduate student housing...

Well, looks like the rumors were true. Conan O'Brien is touring and he's bringing his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour to Los Angeles, which is described as "a night of music, comedy, hugging, and the occasional awkward silence (the buzz about this is huge and the website has appeared to crash)." He'll be hitting up the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk on Saturday, April 24th for an evening of fun and many, many laughs. Universal is, of course, where his old Late-night NBC studio is.

Spring Quarter, '08: This was probably the biggest we've ever seen. It took 10 minutes for the thousands of students to make it through the Strathmore Ave. tunnel. (Photo: Ryan D. Night) Despite a ban on the final's week celebration that is UCLA's Undie Run, over 1,500 students are already signed up on Facebook for next Wednesday's event. And it seems UCLA officials aren't going to stop it from happening, save for having campus...
