Join LAist’s Explore LA for an evening of clacking tiles and try your hand at one of the world’s most beloved games. Whether you’re a seasoned player or picking up a tile for the very first time, you’ll leave with new friends and a deeper appreciation of the tile game.
Our evening starts with a beginner’s lesson in Hong Kong-style mahjong, from 6 p.m. - 6:45 p.m., taught by Andy Luong and Rachel Hwang. (Read more about Andy and Rachel’s mahjong-teaching bona fides here.) We’ll review game setup, game play, and talk a little bit about the many varieties of mahjong.
After the lesson, we’ll open the tables for free play until 8 p.m. You can come to the beginner lesson and stick around or join us just for some game play. Bring a friend, bring a partner, or come solo and meet someone new at the table. This event is ideal for newbies, beginners, and patient intermediates. LAist will provide tables and tiles, but feel free to bring your set if you have one! We’ll also provide snacks and beverages, because no mahjong night is complete without that.
