This competition among 16 poets centers around the Japanese haiku: a poem of 17 syllables in three lines of five, seven, and five. While haikus are traditionally about nature, these poems will be based on audience suggestions. Applause decides the winners of each round, and the grand prize winner gets $500. In between rounds, there’s music and dancing.
