Why we ask for your email

Why is LAist asking for my email?

You may have noticed that articles on LAist.com now ask you to log in in order to access the full article.

We understand you may have some questions about this. Millions of readers like you come to our website every month, many of whom are visiting the site for the first time. We want to connect with you in a way we couldn’t before, which is why we’re asking you to sign in using your email for free and never miss an important local story.

Is this a paywall?

No. We are not currently charging for access to our articles.

Do I have to provide my email to access every story on LAist?

Email registration is required after viewing one newly-published story and for all stories published over 24 hours ago. However once you’ve logged in, all content on LAist will be accessible on your current browser and we will not require it again (unless you delete your cookies or log out). If you use a different device or browser, you will be asked again in which case you can simply log in again.

What will you do with my email address?

We use your email to better understand general site visit behavior in order to better customize the content we suggest to you. Unless you explicitly choose to subscribe to our newsletter when you first log in, you will not be subscribed to or re-subscribed to any of our newsletters.

I already gave you my email address, or am already subscribed to LAist emails. Why are you asking for it again?

This feature uses cookies stored in your browser. If you access LAist using a different device or browser, clear your browser cache, or refresh your history frequently, you may be prompted to log in a second time.

Rest assured, even if you are subscribed or had previously subscribed to any of our newsletters, you will not get duplicate emails so you can log in as many times as necessary, and you should not get additional emails.

Please reach out to us if you’re experiencing issues by replying to any newsletter or using our contact page.
