Food Fight: Woman Sues Over Cupcake Sleeves

You know what your cupcake is missing? A sleeve. No, not the paper wrapping with which it's already adorned -- something else, that might make it look like an ice cream cone, a hamburger, or a tub of popcorn. (Because cupcakes are otherwise such unappealing foods.) Fortunately, such an item exists

The OC Register concludes that "$4.95 for any regular-sized cupcake seems a bit extreme." Perhaps. Yet, there are plenty of pricey cupcakes all over Los Angeles and Angelenos keep shelling out to quell their cravings.

Magnolia Bakery Opens in Los Angeles Today

After months of anticipation (and some revelatory chatter about the business of parking) New York's Magnolia Bakery is ready to open its doors today here in Los Angeles. It's widely accepted that Magnolia started the international cupcake craze, thanks to pop culturally iconic cameos in Sex and the City and SNL's "Lazy Sunday." Their cupcakes are amazing--but before you queue the eye roll and bemoan the continued popularity of a persistent food trend, know that...

Vegan Chef Emerges Victorious in TV's 'Cupcake Wars'

One of Chloe's vegan cupcakes (Lindsay William-Ross/LAist) Vegan food scored a big win last night on Food Network's Cupcake Wars, thanks to local chef Chloe Coscarelli. Battling round by round against bakers using animal-based ingredients (butter, eggs, and so on) Coscarelli managed to out-score everyone to take top honors in the episode. Blogger Quarrygirl has a full recap of the episode, where she breaks down the cruelty-free cupcake action. For the first round, Coscarelli...

Local Vegan Chef Chloe Coscarelli Tackles TV's 'Cupcake Wars' Tonight

Some of Chloe Coscarelli's Vegan Cupcakes (Lindsay William-Ross/LAist) Can a cupcake that's made without butter, eggs, or chocolate even dream of competing head to head with one that's full of dairy? This is the daunting conventional wisdom that local vegan chef Chloe Coscarelli faces in tonight's episode of the Food Network's Cupcake Wars, where she pits her animal product-free sweet treats against traditional cupcakes to see who emerges victorious. Coscarelli, a vegan for the...

Famous Cupcakes Introduces D.I.Y. Cupcake Mix

Photo by Zach Behrens/LAist L.A.'s best cupcake shop--that's just, like, an opinion, man--recently introduced a line of cupcake mixes so you can rock out at home and impress your friends. The $13 mixes make 18 cupcakes and include the mix, liners, frosting and any toppings if necessary (like pink sugar crystals for the vanilla flavor). The flavors offered--Red Velvet, Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate, Black Tie (dark chocolate), pumpkin and others--are basically the same as what...

New Mini Food Truck Lot Spot in Hollywood?

Here's a alert for calorie-minded sensibilities. The Grilled Cheese Truck this afternoon will make an appearance at the Frosted Cupcakery in Hollywood today (would suggesting grilled cheese cupcakes be taking it too far). The brick and mortar sweets shop at Highland and Lexington has about six parking spots, making it a possible future location for regular truck appearances (it's the streets where trucks and police sometimes don't get along), according to owners. The truck...

Taste Tasting Hollywood's Newest Cupcake Shop, Frosted Cupcakery

After a taste test yesterday and comments from readers, it's safe to say that Long Beach's Frosted Cupcakery location in Hollywood will be a local staple, giving other popular cupcake shops some good competition. The extremely friendly staff serves up a variety of cupcakes flavors, including ice cream cupcakes (wow, just wow) and pupcakes for dogs (they are most popular than cats, you know?). So watch out, Los Angeles, this shop is here to stay....

Popular Long Beach Cupcake Shop Opens Hollywood Location

On Saturday, Frosted Cupcakery opened its second location in Hollywood. If the excitement in Long Beach over this shop is any indicator, Frosted may have a chance at giving Sprinkles, Crumbs, Famous and others a run for their money. Not only does the eatery offer a slew of daily cupcakes, they have pupcakes, which are meat filled cupcakes for dogs. Prices are $2.95 for each regular cupcake, $2.00 for a bag of three pupcakes...

The donut was decent with delicious frosting, and the bakery's...

New Cupcake Shop Opens in Las Vegas, Offers $750 Cupcake

Photo: IMAGESOFVEGAS.COM/ISPHOTOGRAPHY Although it soft opened last month, Sweet Surrender Cupcake and Candy Shop in Las Vegas' Palazzo officially announced its opening today, on National Cupcake Day, of course. Besides the more pedestrian cupcake flavors like red velvet, lemon strawberry and chocolate ganache, the superstar sweet treat is the "Decadence D’Or." Retail price: $750.00. So what does a $750 cupcake taste like? A blogger tasting party is probably out of the question, but the...

Photos: Today is National Cupcake Day! What's Your Fav?

Personally, Famous Cupcakes from Valley Village (now in Beverly Hills, too) takes the cake when it comes to best cupcakes in Los Angeles. It's not about buzz or the crazy themed flavors, it's the cake part. Everyone can do frosting, but the true test is the cake part. Is it moist? Full of flavor? Could you eat it without the frosting? That's just me, though. Today is National Cupcake Day and as we asked you...

Tuesday is National Cupcake Day. So Who Has the Best?

A selection of Crumbs cupcakes (Photo by Julie Wolfson/LAist) Believe it or not, cupcakes remain a beloved food trend that seems to keep steadily growing as more cupcake-centric bakeries keep opening up around town. Whether you're on the cupcake bandwagon or not, at this time of year many of us make plenty of room for sweet treats as we gather with friends, family, and co-workers to celebrate the season. But it's not just Hanukkah...

Hanukkah, Festival of Eats

Photo by The Gifted Photographer via Flickr Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. But one happy fact is that while not everyone will participate in the dreidel spinning and menorah lighting, the food of Hanukkah is some of the best fare that transcends denominational boundaries, thanks to the universal appeal of fried food and sweet treats. There are several places in Los Angeles who offer all manner and variety...

Kiss My Bundt Celebrates 1 Year, Upcoming Cookbook

Caroline on Crack/LAist It's been almost a year since the popular alternative cupcakery opened its doors on West 3rd Street, TastingTableLA reminds us in an e-mail. Back then, LAist Contributor Caroline on Crack was happy with the bakery for three reasons: "1) they are available in teeny tiny cupcake-size bundts rather than not-so-cute bundt cake slices, 2) they aren't uber sweet, making them a perfect coffee complement and 3) the small bundts are pleasantly...

Food's Lunatic Fringe: The Mad Genius of LudoBites

Forget the whole food truck trend, and consider for a moment the idea of roving chefs and semi-rogue restaurants appearing within another food-space. Like a sort of culinary hobo with a spot on the guest list, Chef Ludovic Lefebvre works out of the tiny kitchen at Breadbar on 3rd Street, an invited squatter of sorts with a short tenure as the night-shift guy. Only it's his name that emblazons the temporary signage and the daily...

Harry Potter Mania: Cupcakes or Jelly Beans?

Photo: Julie Wolfson/LAist Crumbs is constantly reinventing itself every month with new cupcakes matched with current events. When it was Elvis' birthday, the released a magical fried peanut butter cupcake. Now Harry Potter is out and the sweets are casting spells like Stupify, a vanilla cake with light green vanilla frosting, decorated with m&m's, chocolate chips, colored sprinkles, and toffee. This reminds us: awhile back, Harry Potter Jelly Beans hit the market. You know,...

NOLA Ice Burglary Demonstrates What Shop Owners Should Do

Security footage of the break-in One of the most consistent tips police give retail business owners along Ventura Blvd. is to leave cash registers empty and open over night to show potential burglars there's nothing to steal. However, that doesn't mean they'll try anyway. One night last week, the New Orleans Sno-Ball and Cupcake Shop, NOLA Ice and Se' La Vi Sweets in Sherman Oaks, became a victim when a man threw a rock...

Recession Obsession: Randy's Donuts

Growing up on the East Coast I recognized early in life that doughnut culture orbited around the sugary planet called “Dunkin Donuts.” Some of my earliest memories were commercials featuring a gentlemen (who resembled both Super Mario and Hitler) who would exclaim softly through a grin, “it’s time to make the donuts.” Los Angeles didn't seem to have an equivalent character, nor a universally agreed upon doughnut hub. I observed the undiscerning masses finding satisfaction in the city's numerous, tiny independent doughnut shops (whose wares looked to all have rolled off the same assembly line in Palmdale.) But it didn’t take long to figure out that the most prominent doughnut in LA was three stories tall and stale as hell (see picture above.)

What's Up, Cupcake?

How does the cupcake crumble? These are from Crumbs. (Photo by Julie Wolfson/LAist) They just won't go away. Not even eclipse-able by Frozen Yogurt, the ubiquitous cupcake has held Los Angeles in its sugary, frosted, portable grip for the past few years, and doesn't seem to be letting go. In today's LA Times, food writer Mary MacVean looks into the cupcake phenomenon and tries to unravel its sweet mystery. Why do we still adore...

Dessert? Two Sweet Eateries Open on Ventura Boulevard

They may be only a fourth mile apart, but both family friendly yogurt chain Menchies and newcomer Sweet Rarts just recently opened in Sherman Oaks' restaurant row. First came the addicting and popular Menchies of Valley Village fame, which opened at Ventura and Dixie Canyon, most appropriately next to an elementary school.

New Cupcake Company Sets up Shop in the Valley

it's been about two years since Vi Trinh left her pursuit of a child psychology degree at UCLA to open Se' La Vi Sweets as a private catering business. Instead of doing homework, she would watch the Food Network and bake. So at the insistence of her boyfriend--and now partner Physent Walker--she dropped out of college and applied to Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena. She was accepted, but could not afford tuition, so she just...

Cupcake Challenge Winners Announced!

We came, we saw, we tasted... and so did hundreds of cupcake fans at Sunday's sold-out Nesquik Cupcake Challenge. Part of the tough task of eating the many, many, many sweet treats up for grabs from several local cupcake bakeries was marking a ballot to indicate your top three picks in three categories. Now all the ballots have been counted, and--drumroll, please--Los Angeles, here are your winners:

Cupcake Challenge: Pretty Pleased With Frosting on Top

The Return of the Guinness Cupcake

No one really likes green beer or Shamrock Shakes. And corned beef and cabbage is iffy at best. Luckily Yummy Cupcakes has brought back their Guinness cupcakes this year, available today and tomorrow at both store locations, in Burbank and in Santa Monica. The Guinness is added with a light hand, so the mild cake tastes mostly of buttermilk, cocoa and brown sugar. The glazed topping holds the strongest taste of ale, topped with...

The Cupcake Will Never Die: Crumbs Expands to Calabasas

This last Saturday, Crumbs Bake Shop opened their doors on yet another location, this time in the West Valley city of Calabasas. And in the tradition of their grand openings, they'll celebrate by giving 1,000 cupcakes away next Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. That's one per person, first come, first serve. At previous openings like at Glendale and Beverly Hills, there were lines around the block before the shops even opened, and the free...

Mapping LA's Cupcake Wars

View Larger Map TV Tango's Mike Vicic tipped us off to this Food TV tidbit, as well as his own endeavor in the world of cupcakes. Despite a recession, the froyo takeover, and the precarious whims of taste-trends, cupcakes have remained a local favorite. But Vicic wonders: "Now, is the cupcake craze ready for primetime TV?" Let's hope so, for the sake of the Food Network, who are set to bring viewers a show devoted...

Cold Stone Creamery Steps into Cupcake Trend

Like most places, sales have been sluggish at Cold Stone storefronts across the nation in the current economy. Loyal customers who visit the store 2.3 times a month on average are coming in less. And although they have closed 100 stores, they are opening new ones and are now adding new items to hopefully boost sales. One of the newest items that officially debuted yesterday (but were sold before prior to the Superbowl) were their...

Eat This: Cupcake with Pan Fried Peanut Butter

Happy 74th Birthday, Elvis! If you were alive today (oh wait, conspiracy theory #1445 says you are alive), you would have loved this cupcake with one of your favorite foods that we just tasted at Crumbs Bake Shop. Peanut butter based cupcakes usually don't taste very peanut butter-like. That was until Crumbs used a rich swirl of--oh my God--pan fried peanut butter in today's special treat. Mixed in with peanut butter and banana frosting...

It was originally reported that 1,000 complimentary cupcakes would be given away, but when we called around 11:30 a.m. to see if they were all gone,...

Judge Denies Cupcake Lawsuit, Sprinkles to Try Again

Good news for the best cupcake storefront in town: a federal judge yesterday dismissed Beverly Hills' Sprinkles trademark infringement case against Famous Cupcakes in Valley Village "citing problems with Sprinkles' court filing," according to CBS2. Famous uses a dot within a circle design on their packaging and website, but Sprinkles says the have a copyright for that and uses the design on their own cupcakes. But this is not the end of it: "attorneys from...

Sprinkles Cupcakes Sues Famous Cupcakes Over Dots

Let's face it. Ever since Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills first filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Famous Cupcakes in Valley Village over the use of a modern circle, people had to give the competitor a try. What happened? Business went up for the Valley Village storefront, according to employees, as many cupcake fans discovered they liked Famous better (us included). Famous was using a circle-within-a circle (dot within a dot) theme on their...

Yummy Cupcakes - We Got the Goods

After discussing the various available Easter cupcakes yesterday, we just had to check them out for ourselves at Yummy Bakery. The Egg Hunt, Pictured on the left, is a coconut cupcake topped with a coconut buttercream and decorated with the standard green-tinted coconut and jelly beans. Although the Egg Hunt is cute as a button, I have to admit I much prefer the chocolate with cream cheese coconut topping. You can always buy a bag...

Last-Minute Lineup for Valentine's Day Cupcakes

Encountered this lineup for Vanilla Bake Shop in Santa Monica. The line was 20 stylish ladies deep with a sprinkling of guys. I asked one of the would-be cupcake customers who she was buying cupcakes for and she just said, "A friend." Another customer behind us wondered aloud why there were so many women and not really any guys. I guess women are more apt to buy cute cakes for each other and maybe...

Are Cupcakes Worth Waiting in this Line?

The line. For cupcakes. Joy, my ass. I've never tried Sprinkles Cupcakes before, but I'd heard they were the cupcake shit, and I was hoping to send them to my mom for her birthday (happy birthday Mom!) as kind of a "love from LA" type of gift. So I get to the cupcake place, and lo and behold, there is a line. Out the door. 30 people deep. For CUPCAKES. I'm just saying--really--a line?!...

Almost Good Enough to Eat

It was a sunny morning when I decided to stop by Jamaica Cakes on Pico. I'd heard good things, and I was ready for something sweet. They had some great looking chocolate espresso cupcakes, looking almost like muffins, with just a dollop of cream cheese frosting, and red velvet, but no others. Still, there was a pleasing assortment of cookies and a number of breakfast pastries. I wanted that chocolate espresso cupcake, but went against...
