Coachella: Day One 04/16/10

Beyond the far reaches of LA, where its last subsets of cities have finally dwindled down, lies a strange place: a desolate and scattered collection of cities where any passing bystander is unsure where civilization ends and the desert starts. Indian casinos, gentlemen’s clubs, and outlet malls are a common theme along the freeway, and you kind of get the feeling that this is where Hollywood’s lost dreams end up. The inhabitants seem to know this, too, for their freeway literally says, “10 E - Indio, Other Desert Cities”, directly acknowledging this stark existence on both the literal and metaphorical front. But amidst this barren landscape, something, once a year for the past 11 years, very special happens.

The giant white crams is taken from the Japanese legend that promises peace, hope and tranquility if you fold one thousand origami paper...

Coachella 2010 Lineup Announced: Jay-Z, Pavement, Muse, Faith No More Top Extensive 3-Day Bill

Goldenvoice managed push out the 2010 Coachella lineup this morning -- a full 3 months in advance of the 3-day festival April 16-18 in Indio -- and before the typical fake Coachella posters made the rounds. Two highly anticipated comebacks are realized with Pavement and Faith No More, but read deep into the small print and you'll see Sly and the Family Stone, Devo, Grace Jones, and other blasts from the past. But really,...

Coachella Line-Up Starts to Fill Out

Paul McCartney headlines Day One of the 2009 Coachella Music Festival (more photos here) While the official list won't be out 'til sometime in early 2010, Coachella fanatics have been gathering what intel they can for awhile about who is playing and who is just a rumor. Phish Rock Rolling Stones Halloween Costume at Festival 8

It wasn't until concertgoers arrived at the gates yesterday that they finally learned what classic album Phish would cover in its entirety during their "musical costume" set at Festival 8. Reviving a tradition that began in 1994 when Phish covered The Beatles' The White Album, last night the quartet staged an ambitious cover of the Rolling Stones' 18-song double LP, Exile on Main St. As in years past, the costume choice was a closely-guarded secret...

Tonight In Rock: Phish, DâM-FunK, Times New Viking, Black Gold

Tonight Vermont-based jam band Phish (LAist Review) will be concluding Festival 8, a three-day stint in Indio at the famed Empire Polo Club. Indie rock duo Black Gold are poised to take on the Troubadour with none other than all-female rock trio Girl In A Coma. And, lastly, Ohio-based lo-fi rock act Times New Viking will be performing at the Echo with San Franciscan noise-infused pop outfit Sic Alps for this week's edition of Part Time Punks. But we strongly suggest heading over to Amoeba Music in Hollywood to catch Los Angeles' own "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Culver City-based DJ/selector DâM-FunK.

Phish Pick Fans Up at 8 in Indio

Last night Phish tore through the first two of eight sets which the quartet's scheduled to play during their three day "Festival 8" in Indio, California. The Halloween-themed bacchanal, taking place at the astonishingly beautiful Empire Polo Grounds (also home to the Coachella music festival), is a homecoming of sorts for Phish, which invented a new rock festival model in 1996—even before disgruntled audience members rioted at Woodstock '99 over the rapacious price of water. Phish was the first contemporary band to organize multi-day rock festivals which treated attendees like guests, not numbers. This novel approach inspired Bonnaroo, where Phish performed for the first time in June.

Coachella Set Times Released

It's 9 p.m. on Saturday at Coachella and you've got to choose between M.I.A., Band of Horses and Junior Boys. M.I.A. at the Grammys, ready to give birth (AP Photo/Mark J. Although plans to roll the new mom onstage at this year's Academy Awards show didn't pan out (thank goodness?), she has just been added to the line up for...

Amy Winehouse at Coachella? No, No, No

British singer and headline-maker Amy Winehouse has revealed via a spokesman that her Coachella performance next month is a (No, No) no-go, according to the Associated Press. Because Winehouse is facing legal woes in the UK stemming from recent charges she allegedly attacked a fan last fall in London, getting the songstress to the States would be no easy feat: "Being charged with a crime often makes it difficult for people to get U.S....

Finally. Coachella Lineup Announcement Coming Tomorrow

The internet just let out a big sigh of relief at 5:02 p.m. when KROQ updated their twitter saying that they will announce Coachella's lineup tomorrow morning sometime during Kevin & Bean. Safe to say, it's been a long week for those who were expecting the announcement on Monday or Tuesday. Just for fun: "In a novel move, Goldenvoice has decided to announce this year's lineup at the end of the [festival] weekend. The...

Coachella Lineup Will Not Be Announced Today

Layoff the "refresh" button kids, and close your browsers...The much-anticipated Coachella lineup will not be announced today. Why? Well, the LA Times spoke to Coachella organizer Paul Tollett, who said: “I know everybody is going crazy, but we’re not stalling, we’re still working on the show. Everything we do is in service of the show, not in service of the announcement of the show. Believe me, we’re excited to tell everybody and we want...

Ryan Seacrest Tries To Boost Indie Street Cred, To No Avail

There's nothing more piteous than a prominent media personality attempting to be hip and omniscient (except maybe attempting to give a blind dude a high five). And that's exactly what happened a few moments ago when American Idol host and "celebrity wrangler" Ryan Seacrest posted an unsubstantiated, preemptive bill for this year's Coachella via his website and twitter. The post, entitled "Coachella Line-Up Announced!," surfaced around 11 AM this morning, touting Nine Inch Nails, Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, Katy Perry, The Killers, Neil Young, Adele, Foo Fighters, Public Enemy and Lupe Fiasco as headliners.

Coachella Lineup Announced? Not Yet. Maybe Tomorrow?

If you're still waiting for the festival's announcement, take a number. "We'll have more info on the Coachella lineup as soon as we get it," the festival's sponsor, KROQ, announced around 7:45 a.m. Meanwhile, rumors that David Bowie would be reviving Ziggy Stardust flared up on Twitter yesterday. To that, Bowie apparently released a statement calling the rumor "poppycock... while we're about it, David Bowie does not have a Twitter account." UPDATE: LAist reader...

Will the Coachella Lineup Be Announced Today?

Music fans across the world are waiting with bated breath for the Coachella announcement, which is supposedly coming today. People are done with the rumors and want to book their trips, possibly taking advantage of the new "recession proof" payment plan.

Coachella Apparently Knew They Wouldn't be Releasing the Lineup This Morning

Prince at Coachella 2008 | Photo by Joey Maloney/LAist The world thought Coachella promoter Golvenvoice was going to release the long-awaited line up for this year's Coachella festival. In fact, it seems that was the plan, but come this morning, there no line up, no buzz--just disappointment. Idolator got to the bottom of it and e-mailed Kevin and Bean at KROQ while they were on air. Surprisingly, Bean responded: you know it has nothing...

Coachella 2009 Tickets 'Recession-Proof' says USA Today

Are you one of those festival-goers who complains about the exorbitant price of tickets these days? Well, the fine folks at Coachella have designed a plan with the current economic downturn in mind. According to an article published earlier today by USA Today, tickets for this year's festival will be offered in a variety of payment methods. Aside from paying all $269 up front, fans will be able to "pay half down and the rest April 1, or pay 10% followed by equal installments on March 1 and April 1 without interest or additional fees." These proposed price-sensitive "layaway" plans will be sold solely via the internet and they will not be available for $99 single-day admission. So now there should be less deterrence when it comes to forking over your hard-earned cash.

Confirmed: Paul McCartney Takes On Coachella

Earlier in the day, an independent confirmation of multiple Grammy Award- winning English singer-songwriter Sir Paul McCartney playing Coachella surfaced on music website Consequence of Sound. The aforementioned website recently provided a substantial glimpse (now totaling some 36 "rumored" artists) into what is shaping up to be the hottest festival this year. And although McCartney is expected to cycle through his usual bevy of hits, it's safe to say that his performance will focus primarily upon 2008's Electric Arguments, the third collaborative electronic effort with producer Youth under the moniker the Fireman. Expect an official line-up announcement straight from the horse's mouth in the coming days.

Coachella 2009: Rumored And Confirmed

It is the start of a new year and that means we're slouching towards Southern California's biggest music festivals, starting with Coachella in the middle of April. And, as usual, the internet is simply ablaze with line-up rumors. But this year, much like last, crazed fans have taken things a step further on the festival's message board, going as far as to contact bands directly for confirmation.

Prince's LA Life: Paisley, Politics, and Prophets

The rumors were true, so if you've already booked your vacation time or hotel room, change it up. Jenny Lewis at Coachella 2008 (more photos here and here) | Photo by Joey Maloney/LAist Rumors are already floating around for next year's Coachella. "While an official announcement is still forthcoming," teases The Daily Swarm, "Coachella promoters Goldenvoice have begun booking artists for next year's festival, which has been moved up two weeks from its regular last weekend of April slot to April 17-19, 2009." Of course, they later updated their post saying a...

Shelby Lynne Puts the "Eff You!" in F-U-N at Stagecoach Festival* (Now With Video!)

Country diva and Palm Springs native Shelby Lynne treated the folks in the audience for her show last night at Indio's Stagecoach Festival to an earful. But she wasn't serving up just the sweet sounds of her songs--she had an awful lot to say about how unhappy she was with the venue and the attendance."I love singing to empty seats," Lynne sarcastically said as she opened her set, remarking about the vacant chairs in the...

Missing Coachella Pig Found... Whew!

Yup, that's right. Ding, dong, Roger Water's pig is dead. Found, slaughtered in two parts at the La Quinta country club. Coachella Overheard

Love 'em or hate 'em, music festivals are the dim sum of the concert-going experience; try a little of everything and go back for more of what you like (or ditch out on what you don't). This year's Coachella was no exception, with acts like country crooner Dwight Yoakam vying for time against dance-rock lovelies Hot Chip, or Prince breaking down the funk for the masses after a particularly breathtaking Portishead set. With the...

2008 Coachella Music Festival - Day One

Finally, after all the hubub and debate of the quality of this year's Coachella lineup, the festival got underway Friday afternoon. Featuring Jack Johnson at the top of the bill, the day featured outstanding performances from the Raconteurs who proved that they aren't just Jack White's side project but rather a band that is developing their own sound and identity. The Verve, playing for the first time in nearly a decade sounded like they hadn't...

2008 Coachella Music Festival - Day Two

In the previous installations of Coachella there have been some huge headliners. Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, Bjork, The Beastie Boys but none quite on the level of day two's headliner, the Purple One, Prince. From the moment he hit the stage with Morris Day and Shelia E. it was apparent that the audience was in for a lesson in musicianship and showmanship. As he played through a set mixed of standards and the cover...

Keeping up Your Strength at Coachella

Outside food and drinks are prohibited at Coachella, but the occasional peanut butter sandwich has been known to slip by security. Even if you can get into the "hospitality area" it's slim pickings as far as decent food is concerned. The options at the cash-only food tents tend to be pretty limited. That doesn't mean you have to spend three days surviving only on kettle corn and Ecstacy. The Coachella Valley is home to...

Coachella: Does that Tent Come with a Blowjob?

Well, ain't we swank? This year, in additional to their usual on-site campground, Coachella is offering fancy-shmancy "On Site Lodging." You still can't bring in your own beer, but at least they sell it there. With On Site lodging, your tent (along with air beds, new sleeping bags and pillows) will already be set up for you. All you have to do is stumble over and collapse after a long, hot day in the pit....

Britain Continues its Invasion

100 years and nine months ago, an American ship called Chesapeake was cannonballed by a British vessel, and not in the Ron Burgundy way. Apparently, the Americans refused to be boarded, the Brits fired and an international incident was born. A century later, our shores are still under assault, but less from the nautical variety and more of the musical kind. Very recently, we have been boarded by British Sea Power, who rocked Spaceland Thursday...

Maybe the West Hollywood omg I'm a slut costume has worn thin(ner). Maybe you just want to get away from...

CD Review: Digitalism 'Idealism'

Artist: Digitalism Album: Idealism Release Date: June 2007 Label: Astralwerks Digitalism is a duo, composed of a couple German guys, Jens Moelle and Ismail Tuefekci - they played at Coachella this year and will be back in LA to do a DJ set at the end of October. Even though I've got the video of 'Pogo' linked above, I don't think that track is representational of the album. 'Pogo' is much more rock oriented...

Extra, Extra: Michael Bauer's Gaffe and Century City's Foul-Smelling Multiplex

An "Eater LA" reader reveals just how wrong San Francisco Chronicle critic Michael Bauer still is. Police officials revealed details of the Burbank shooting rampage that led to the deaths of three people. Good news public transit fans: local officials broke ground on a $640-million project that will include eight new Expo Line stations. Catch legendary comics writer Peter Bagge (of Hate, MAD and Weirdo Magazine fame) at the Secret Headquarters tonight (did I...

Daft Punk @ LA Sports Arena, 7/21/07

Daft Punk last performed in Los Angeles proper in 1997 in support of their now classic debut album Homework at the club Pink. I was ill that evening and couldn't make the show, although my next door neighbor at the time went and raved about how awesome the show was for the following several weeks. When Daft Punk played at Coachella in 2006, southern California fans were treated to, by all accounts, one of...

This Week in the World of -Ist

There's so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it's almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don't have to! Londonist took a walk through Oliver Twist's London, thanks to a gorgeous map layer for Google Earth. They also caught up with modern-day fictional London, with the Fantastic Four and 28 Weeks Later. It was a week of insanity over at DCist. They started the week off with...

The Hollow Trees to play Stagecoach: An Interview

Coachella has spawned a lilttle 'un called Stagecoach - a country version of the successful festival that attracted 60,000 people to the polo fields in Indio. One of our favorite local country-folk bands, The Hollow Trees, has been invited to bring their delightful tunes to the two day affair that will include the likes of George Strait, Kenny Chesney, and Willie Nelson. We were lucky to catch the big tree himself, Gregory Tree for...

How We're Doing on the Rumors

We don't like to post rumors but we know you'd hate us if we sat on our hands as juicy stuff filled our In Boxes and we didn't let you know that something could be excellent. So now that Coachella has come and gone, we can admit to being wrong about Gwen Stefani being there, but be pleased that we told you that Scarlett Johansson would be singing with the Jesus and Mary Chain...

Dozens of Coachella Attendees Stranded at Bus Station

If you haven't seen some of your friends online today it might be because they're stuck at the Indio Greyhound station with dozens of fans trying to get home. KESQ is reporting that so many people tried to take buses home without first buying tickets that the scheduled buses became full, stranding many who have waited all day in the heat despite having tickets. "I've been been waiting to get to L.A. for like...

Arcade Fire @ Coachella, 4/28

Our most anticipated band at Coachella did not disappoint. They mixed their new songs off the amazing "Neon Bible" with your faves from their debut, "Funeral". And although we love love love "Neon Bible", the best moment in last night's performance was when singer Win Butler jumped into the crowd during "Rebellion (Lies)", never once wiping a smile on his face. Lighten up Win, they're cheering! This clip was taken from the AT&T Blue...

Dear Coachella,

You know we love you, but we think it's time for us to break up. In the last two months LAist probably had more stories (38), pictures, and videos about Coachella and its artists than even Pitchfork, Stereogum, or the LA Times. But unlike those fine publications, we also gave our readers tips on how to best enjoy themselves, where to eat on the drive in, how to get into secret shows, and we...

Coachella Secrets Revealed - Andrew Bird Is Really A Moose

I knew he was inventive and eclectic but I had no idea he had antlers. Confident and whistling, Andrew Bird delivered a sublime and fascinating set with all the nuance of a small club date -- seemingly oblivious to the entire desert and the thousands of tweaking, dehydrated kiddies twirling toward the tent fringes. No one can resist a violin and a theremin. Below, check out the subtle and unmistakable Dr. Stringz performing, "Plasticities."...

Dance Dance Revolution - Girl Talk @ Coachella

Red Hot Chili Who? The Good The Bad And The Wha? Clearly, the belle of this year's 104 degree ball was Pittburgian genius, Greg Gillis, aka Girl Talk. This master sampler/DJ/remixer melted faces on Saturday night with his awe-inspiring, intense nonsense -- super creations of musical hybrids -- a dozen songs spliced together to create something overwhelmingly familiar and entirely new. Energy, energy and more energy -- a giant screen flashed four frames reading...

LAist Guide to the Festival of Books

If you aren't going to Coachella this weekend and somehow think that attending the LA Times Festival of Books requires less planning...well, you may be right. But only by the smallest of margins. The festival keeps growing and this year may be the largest with 400 authors, 300 exhibit booths, 6 outdoor stages and 97 hour-long panels featuring some of the quirkiest minds in the country. What does this mean for you? In the words...

The Lemonheads @ The El Rey, 4/25

If you're a dude you wanna hate Evan Dando for his flowing long locks and his runway model looks and his lack of irony of wearing an old school Lou Reed tshirt and Vans. But then he plugs in that SG and does his little stoney version of shredding and you sip your beer and chill the hell out. The Lemonheads are the Goo Goo Dolls without any aspiration. They're the sober man's Replacements....

Getting pumped about Coachella - Sunday

Sunday there are lots of great bands, culminating with the reunion of one of the best groups ever, Rage Against the Machine. Mika: 1 - 1:30 Anathallo: 1:30 - 2 Mando Diao: 2:15 - 2:35 Tapes 'n Tapes: 2:35 -...

The Jesus and Mary Chain @ The Glass House, 4/26

The Jesus and Mary Chain got the band back together last night at the "Coachella Secret Show" in front of a capacity crowd at the Glass House in Pomona. This was their first live show since they broke up at the end of their infamous appearance at the (aptly named) House of Blues on the Sunset Strip in 1998. Last night the Reid Brothers started off rocky, kept it slow, and seemed generally disinterested...

Expected Weekend Highs in Indio: 100, 101, 99

According to the meteorologists over at Weather.com, the three-day forcast for Indio is Hot, Hotter, and Still Damn Hot: 100 degrees today, 101 tomorrow, and 99 Sunday. So with two of the days predicted to hit triple-digits with winds of just 5 to 10 mph, may we make some recommendations: - Bring tons of sunscreen - Ladies: bikini tops; gentlemen: Speedos - Floppy hats and parasols for all! - Pick up some trash -...

Anticipating Tiesto at Coachella

To continue to get you excited about Coachella, LAist is bringing you some banging live performances from bands that are on our "must see" list. Now we used to really be into house and trance and back in those days remember being in LOVE with Tiesto and his style. He can make you forget time, which could be dangerous considering he's the last act of the night. We will be very torn between the...

Coachella: Where to Eat

Don't even bother trying to slip that contraband jar of peanut butter into your backpack. Outside food and drinks are prohibited at Coachella. And the options at the cash-only food tents tend to be pretty limited. That doesn't mean you have to spend three days surviving only on kettle corn and ecstacy. The Coachella Valley is home to some excellent eats. If you do manage to escape the festival, here are some places to...

LAist Interviews Carson Daly

The inaugural EconSM conference, produced by Rafat Ali's ContentNext Media Network (parent of the excellent PaidContent site) is rockin' the Beverly Hilton with entertainment and new media heavies. EconSM addresses the present and potential economy of the social media marketplace in regards to online news, Hollywood, music, mobile media, and more. The amusing "Social Media Meets Hollywood" panel, in which Carson Daly sat alongside The L Word executive producer Ilene Chaiken, preceded lunch. Daly...

Arctic Monkeys to play Troubadour on Sunday

Don't you just love Secret Shows? If you can't make it to Coachella on Friday to see the Arctic Monkeys (who we now know will be sandwiched quite nicely between the Silversun Pickups and the Jesus and Mary Chain on the main stage), the much-hyped Brits will be playing a few days later on Sunday at the historic Troubadour. People swear there's still a few tickets left if you click here and use the...

Maneuvering Through Friday's Coachella Lineup

Now that the line-ups have been announced, I'm happy to follow Sloane's lead and speculate on what my day will look like. By using the Coachella scheduler, The Coachooser, I simply turned off blocks of bands I wasn't probably going to be interested in seeing, and turned on blocks of bands that I liked. On Friday there were 19 acts that I kept turned on, and by leaving each set just a little early,...
