You Can Now Fill Up Your Monthly TAP Card With Your Phone

Metro is conducting an experiment that will allow you to fill up your 30-day Metro pass using your phone. TAP-TO-GO is the name of the program and it starts next week and runs through Dec. 1, Metro says. For this short run, you can only get 30-day passes.

To get started, you'll need a special TAP card (no additional fees). You can sign up for the program by texting TAPSIGNUP to 28950 or clicking here. You'll provide your name, address, email and payment information. You'll get your new TAP card in the mail complete with instructions on how to load it. Once you're all signed up, you'll get a text reminder to load up at the end of each 30-day period and you can refill your TAP card using text messaging.

Hopefully, this pilot program will go well and Metro can expand this service to other types of passes.

Seeing as how Metro fares will be increasing in September, you'd be wise to jump on the program now if you're interested. But remember: once single ride fares increase from $1.50 to $1.75, two-hour free transfers will be in effect, which may impact the cost-efficiency of your monthly pass.
