There was an iPocalypse this morning when owners of the now older version of the iPhone went to upgrade the phone's software via iTunes. Users found that the process ended up resetting their phones and because iTunes servers became overloaded as thousands of people across the nation bought the new iPhone 3G, they could not activate the phone, therefore rendering the phone useless for hours.

"It's kinda like running downstairs looking for presents and finding Santa and the presents stuck in the chimney," wrote Robert Gross-Herndon in an e-mail to LAist about his experience this morning.

"This, of course, is what all of you get for being iTools," humorously quipped LAist contritubor, Peggy Archer in an LAist Google Group conversation.

Similarly, people at Apple stores across the nation found the iTunes server crash to hinder their day as it took hours in line to get their phones activated. Some ended up buying their phone, but went home to get it activated later. At The Grove shopping center (pictured above), the Apple Store line was two city blocks long at 1:30 p.m. Grove employees handed out umbrellas to people standing in the sun.
