Thumbs Up For Haefele

Why can't we get more funny and sharp long-form commentary on city politics? That's exactly what Marc Haefele provides in the latest L.A. Alternative Press with his essay on recent media flame-ups and Mayor Hahn's reelection.
Some of these lines had LAist howling:
So why did Bill Bratton meet with the Reverend? Probably for the same reason New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly would meet with former L.A. City Councilman Nate Holden whenever the NYPD batters an arrestee in Bensonhurst.
Memo to Mike Kinsley - some of us would like to see the city's paper take on our politics with this kind of disarming humor and wit. (And we're not quite sure Steve Lopez can handle it all by himself.) It's all well and good to let someone like Max Boot grumble about liberals in an effort to stop people from comparing the Times to the Socialist Worker (which, by the way, isn't working). But you might find more interest than you'd expect if you followed Haefele's lead and covered City Hall as if it's something worth our attention.
