The Wherever Angels of Whatever
Today, the Los Angeles Times practically gives a legal briefing on the Angels fight with the city of Anaheim over a proposed name change.Apparently, the language in the Angels' lease agreement with the city of Anaheim is ambiguous enough that the team could come up with a compromise name of sorts. The contract states that "Anaheim" must be in the team name, but it doesn't explicitly force the team to be called the "Anaheim Angels." So, Arte Moreno could call his team the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" or even "The Los Angeles Angels, a team of really great players who happen to play their games in a city we grudgingly acknowledge is called Anaheim," says one law professor.
LAist thinks "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" sounds like the team is suffering from an identity crisis. Not only is it lame, but it also risks alienating the Orange County fan base which have given the Angels MLB's third-best attendance.
If Arte Moreno really wanted a Los Angeles team, not an Anaheim team, then why didn't he buy the Dodgers instead? While Frank McCourt penny pinches with the Dodgers, the Angels are paying the luxury tax. And we're pretty sure that Moreno wouldn't be "psycho" enough to consider hiring Steve Lyons as a color commentator, a man who Fox (of all stations) suspended after making insensitive remarks about Shawn Green skipping a game for Yom Kippur.
Arte, LA would have welcomed you with open arms... in Dodger blue. In the meantime, good luck promoting your not-quite Los Angeles team.
