Single in the City: The Meet Market
It's a wail, a cry, a plea punctuated sometimes with sobs: "Where do I go to meet someone in LA?" We hear it all the time from friends and co-workers. Heck, we say it ourselves.
LAist's Single in the City cannot masquerade as someone who has all the answers. After all, if we had all the answers to life's burning questions we would be spending our time trying to profit from our wisdom and maybe doing a guest stint on the Dr. Phil show. But this isn't the case. And we don't like Dr. Phil. We've digressed. The fact remains that this is a hard city in which to find yourelf dateless. And it's a hard city in which to find yourself searching for a date. So we'd like to offer you a sampling of ways in which you might encounter Mr. or Ms. Right (or Right Now, since we know how these things go) in this jungle of singlehood called LA.
And it's truly a jungle; from the clubs full of beautiful people to the abundance of dating websites that compete for our profiles, it's hard to discern where it is we might meet someone. A lot of it comes down to chance, the old "right place at the right time" adage exists for a reason. But when you're looking for the right person, where's the right place? Let's explore some options...
Not everyone is the bar type, but according to PubClub, Hermosa Beach's Sharkeez is the number one singles club in LA. While this may seem to be more meat than meet, Sharkeez's reputation may still have a leg to stand on. Looks like those legs are for dancing, so if you're up to shake-shake-shaking that booty, you might shake some stares your way here.
Dating takes time, though, and in this hectic town we don't always have enough to spare. This is where Speed Dating comes in. Check out Pre-Datingfor events that have meeting down to a timed art. And if you need a third party yenta to make you a match, how about a pro from Meet-a-Mate? Then there's networking with LA Singles Network, too. Heck, even the Sierra Club has a dating forum(who knew?)!
Going to these extremes may take nerve, and they aren't for everyone. LAist likes to ask our paired-up pals how they met their sweetie, and at an overwhelmingly often rate, it comes down to chance, and sometimes a friend. So the next time your buddy wants to drag you out of your cave to check out a workshop, a reading, a cooking class, a house party, a ballgame, a whatever, by all means, go! It might just be the right time for your Mr. or Ms. Right!
