Single in the City: Be Your Own Valentine
It can be tough being single in LA. It can be even tougher on an over-the-top hearts-and-flowers day like today. LAist is definitely interested in the plight of the single in the city; what better way to kick off a new regular feature about the state of the date than on the most celebrated (and equally loathed) dating day of the year?
Today shouldn't be about moaning your singlehood; we certainly aren't. Today is about throwing hard earned cash on perishables. And by perishables we mean all things edible (underwear or chocolate), embibable (pink champagne on ice, perhaps?), or inevitable disposable (overpriced roses, and, in some cases, your significant other). Here's where the single has a clear leg up: With no (in)significant other to fret about, you can splurge on yourself with no risk, and pure gain!
In this spirit, LAist's Single in the City would like--no, love--to offer up a few ideas for raising your glass in celebration of your singlehood, and how to be your own Valentine.
Valentine's Day was built on the almighty dollar, so why not add your two cents to the economy, and treat yourself to a little retail therapy? Skip the dizzying red and pink displays and head right for where your heart is. Today is a great day to get yourself that iPod you've been contemplating or those new sheets you've been eyeing (need we remind you of the power of positive thinking?). But if you can't steer clear of the sweet indulgences, by all means sidestep the Sees candy and go with quality; give a top-notch chocolatier like Bodega a whirl.
Singles who love the nightlife can brave the crowds of couples and go to Minibar and try a "Swinging Single". This honey and passionfruit infused vodka drink was LA.com's pick for top Love Potion. This cocktail comes with a caveat, of course; too many "Swinging Singles" and you may wind up swinging home with someone.
Tonight could well be a rough night out alone, and the fact that it's a Monday only helps your cause; laying low on a weeknight is perfectly acceptable! Opt for the cocktail party for one, or call up an intimate group of close friends, and have a little soiree with appetizers and champagne. Hit up your local Trader Joe's after work and stock up on mini-quiches and spinach dip and then relax and enjoy the night. Maybe your mailbox will have a little red envelope filled with a sweet surprise for you when you get home--not a sappy card, but a movie from Netflix! Avoid the syrupy romances, and watch something you like--something with as much bite as you. Bottom line, the name of the game is to have a great time!
Of course, if all else fails, you could just call in single. You never know.
Happy Valentine's Day!
