Short. Solo. Shadow.
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will be served this Saturday at the 10th Annual Theatre of NOTE Performance Marathon. The annual fundraiser for the theatre presents a near 12 hours of over 80 acts in short form and we expect you to stay for the whole thing. John Fleck (above left) of the infamous NEA 4 headlines with Cabaret Voltaire, Lobster Jesus, The Nellie Olesons, and many more. Beginning at 2:00 p.m., this elongated event, extending into the wee hours of the morning, is perfect for a day in Hollywood. Once you have your day pass, you are free to come and go as you please. Shop Amoeba Records, watch a movie at the Arclight, or take the Holly Trolley to dinner. Tip: Park at the ArcLight for $3 if you validate your ticket at the marathon.
Also, Saturday begins Mariette Hartley's If You Get To Bethlehem, You've Gone Too Far, which is quite a departure from her Emmy winning performance in the TV movie, The Incredible Hulk: Married. Based on her memoir, Mariette (above middle) will play 11 characters as she gets lost in rural Connecticut. This reminds us of this short we saw at Slamdance last year where the actress played 7 of her white trash family members in their Oregon home trailer. The two stories are probably not comparable, but we like seeing self-inflicted multiple personalities anyway. Bethlehem runs through the end of February at the Whitefire Theatre.
In other theater news, last night we got a chance to see last week's interviewee, Paul Zaloom, perform his well-crafted 12th solo show - The Mother of All Enemies. Zaloom observes U.S./Arab current affairs and culture through a mix of stand-up cantastoria and shadow puppetry with an anachronistic characterization of Karagoz, "a queer-secular humanist-Quaker-Buddhist-agnostic Arab immigrant artist."
Despite the small shadow screen in a fairly large space, the experience is intimate, letting you voyeur "backstage" through video monitors. Silhouetted puppets contrast the incandescent lights sucking you in visually. And those puppets, with incredible range of realistic human mobility (despite a few priapic tangents), are embodied by Zaloom flawlessly, even in those moments of improvised metatheatricality.
We also never knew e-mailing a military recruiter could be so much fun! The Mother of All Enemies runs through Sunday afternoon at REDCAT.
