The entire facility is currently on lockdown, and no injuries have been reported. The shooter may have fired three shots into the air, either in the basement or on the third floor, according to FOX 5 San Diego.
A construction worker at the facility told the station via phone that he heard several gun shots, and was currently taking cover. An employee who works at the hospital's child care center told NBC 7 that they and other employees had gone through a training on what to do in the event of an active shooter in the past.
"I'm thinking this is something real serious if the SWAT team has to come in," the employee told the station. "It's really concerning for me that there's something going on at the hospital."
U.S. Marshals are on the scene. The San Diego Police Department told FOX 5 that while they were aware of the reports, they had not been called to respond. Armed guards can be seen via aerial footage securing the perimeter. Navy personnel are reported to be searching the facility with the assistance of Navy dogs.
San Diego High School, Garfield High School and Roosevelt Middle school were all locked down. The students are safe, according to a spokesperson for San Diego Unified Schools, and parents have been warned to stay away for the time being.
The Navy Medical Center provides healthcare services to active military members and their families as well as veterans. They employ over 6,500 military and civilian employees.
Update, 10:30 a.m.: After several sweeps of Building 26, the Navy said that they have found no evidence of shooting, according to FOX 5 San Diego. There are still no reported injuries, and no one has been arrested.
