A 12-year old boy was rescued after the sand tunnel he was digging at the beach collapsed on him.
The incident happened at Carpinteria State Beach State Beach, in Santa Barbara County, around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The boy was digging a tunnel about a foot deep in the sand near the water's edge when it collapsed, trapping almost all of his body. Taylor Doram's sister noticed the boy's legs sticking out of the sand, which is when the teen acted fast to save the boy. "We instantly got a couple of friends together and we were digging as fast as we could," she told KEYT.
Although the boy was unconscious after they managed to pull him out, he started breathing not long after he was pulled out. "That was a total relief to us," said Doram.
Carpinteria's interim fire chief Jim Rampton says this is just a reminder to be vigilant around your children. "This kid was just having fun, digging in the sand by himself," he said.
According to the report, the boy was with his family from Chino Hills. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
