Red Car Returning to Downtown Streets?
The oft-lamented, much eulogized Red Car trolley may be about to emerge from gauzy nostalgia and faded memories to roll down the streets of the central city once more.
Los Angeles Downtown News reports that the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA/LA) is funding a study to examine the viability of a trolley loop that would circle downtown with stops near the Staples Center, Disney Hall, and other business district attractions. The proposed 5-mile route would also connect with Metro service via rail and bus, further enhancing transit coverage of the CBD.
It's a great idea, and one would hope there's a way to get it done. It does, however, raise one interesting question: How are LA drivers going to react to sharing crowded downtown streets with a trolley line?
