LAPD chief Charlie Beck had to go into surgery yesterday, after taking a tumble in a motocross accident yesterday.Beck promised that he'll be back and ready to roll on Monday morning. Beck e-mailed the Los Angeles Times: "Broken collarbones are the occasional price you pay for racing motocross."

The 59-year-old Beck has been riding vintage motorcycles and doing off-road racing for more than four decades. He's competed in more than 50 expert-class competitions and won some events, the Times says. This was his third time breaking a bone.

Beck is resting now at his home in the San Gabriel Valley, and he's expected to fully recover.
