Dislike: Those Facebook Rumors About a Serial Killer in the South Bay Are Totally Bogus

Did you catch this one on Facebook? There's a serial killer on the loose in the South Bay and he's targeting women! Don't panic, say local authorities, because it turns out that's just an online rumor, and it's totally false. Where's the dislike button?!

One spot where the rumor swirled was on the Facebook page for Life in Wilmington, notes the LA Times. It stemmed from the report of the murder of a local woman, whose body was found January 2 in some bushes. Adds the Times:

The posts [on Life in Wilmington], which started Jan. 5, warned that other women had been attacked near Harbor College and the San Pedro public library. And the page's organizers wrote: "ATTENTION ALL WOMAN, ANOTHER FEMALE BODY HAS BEEN FOUND NEAR ALAMEDA AND ANAHEIM ST, PLEASE BE ALERT IT MIGHT BE A SERIAL KILLER!!!"

The page was brought to the attention of the Daily Breeze, who shared the postings with the Los Angeles Police Department, who assured them there was no serial killer targeting women in Wilmington and San Pedro.

Life in Wilmington was chastised, and is hoping to avoid rumormongering in the future. They posted:

As you may all know We "LIW" posted a False report and today in the Daily Breeze we got our hands slapped:( or as we say put on blast! LIW will posts information as it comes to US. We would rather have Everyone be careful and enjoy everyday without fear about our city than to live in Fear. Sorry for the confusion and Buenas Noches 90744'rs or as we say Wilmingtonians <]]]]><
