That gust of wind you just felt coming from Silver Lake was actually Paul DePodesta heaving a huge sigh of relief. ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that Brad Penny will miss just one start, after an MRI revealed a stretched nerve in his right bicep. That's great news for Dodgers fans because--there's no other way to spin this--if Penny's injury had been any worse then it would have been a total disaster for the team.
Paul DePodesta made two of the ballsiest trades in MLB trade deadline history. And while we've repeatedly said that we liked them, LAist acknowledges that it puts a lot of faith into just three players... especially Penny. Injuries are all part of the game, but to give up essentially Guillermo Mota and Paul Lo Duca for just Hee Seop Choi could have cost the Dodgers the division and put a bulls-eye on DePodesta's forehead for his entire tenure in Chavez Ravine.
Fortunately, Penny is OK. Kaz Ishii will make one more start before his rebanishment to the bullpen, and then we can all can breathe easy again.
