A young woman was struck by a car and killed on Friday night as she was headed to Coachella. Michala Freeland, 18, of Highland was fatally hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Friday night at about 8:15 p.m. She was attempting to cross Ave 52 at Monroe Street in Indio, near the Empire Polo Club where Coachella occurs, KTLA reports. Family members who witnessed the crash said that Freeland was "running across the street" when she was struck, according to KMIR.

The driver, who had an infant passenger with him in the car at the time, remained at the scene and has not been cited, though the crash remains under investigation. Neither he nor the baby were injured.

Freeland's mother, Titwanna Plako, told KMIR that her daughter had applied to work the festival as a security guard and was getting ready to join the military. This was her first time at Coachella.

Anyone with information should call the Indio Police Department at 760-391-4057.
