Real Estate CEO Gets Bonus Slashed By 25 Percent For Yelling Slurs At Kathy Griffin
Jeffrey Mezger, CEO of major homebuilder KB Home, is facing repercussions for his profane rant against comedian Kathy Griffin and her boyfriend in a Bel-Air neighborhood.
The incident reportedly happened on Saturday night. Griffin’s boyfriend, Randy Bick, had called the police to make a complaint about noise coming from Mezger’s home (Griffin and Mezger are neighbors in Bel-Air). According to the L.A. Times, the complaint centered on noise made by children in Mezger’s backyard pool.
Mezger later called Bick and berated him for making the complaint—the incident was recorded on Bick’s security cameras. Griffin was initially not part of the conversation. But she is later heard saying, “What’s going on,” at which point Mezger starts directing his attention to her, calling her a “bitch” and a "bald d**e”, among other things (the “bald” comment is a reference to Griffin's decision to shave her head in a show of solidarity with her sister, who was undergoing chemotherapy treatment before dying last week). The recording was released to the Huffington Post, which was then retweeted by Suze Orman:
KB Home stated Thursday in a regulatory filing that Mezger will be reprimanded. Namely, his annual bonus will be slashed by 25 percent, reports the L.A. Times. According to Bloomberg, Mezger’s bonus for the fiscal year will be cut by $375,000 because of “recent behavior in his personal dealings with a neighbor." The company also states that he will be fired for any similar incidents in the future.
"Though Mr. Mezger does not believe there is any excuse for the language he used, the incident that led to his losing his temper was the result of the culmination of a series of unneighborly actions taken by Ms. Griffin and her boyfriend," said a Mezger spokesman, reports CNBC. The spokesman claims that the actions included 10 separate noise complaints made by Griffin and Bick.
