A man is recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head after shooting at a taxi driver in Santa Monica.

On Wednesday night around 11:30 p.m., a man and his wife were dropped off at their home on the 800 block of Bay Drive. An argument had erupted over the fare and the man went inside, saying he was going to get cash. When he came back outside, he was holding a handgun and fired several shots into the air and at the taxi, according to KTLA, before going back inside. The cab driver was unharmed.

The man went back inside their home and shot himself in the head. He was transported to the intensive care unit where he was last reported to be in critical condition. According to the L.A. Times, the suspect's infant daughter, toddler son, and a babysitter were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but were unharmed.

Authorities have not released the name of the man. It is unclear what sparked the shooting. "Obviously based on the totality of the circumstances, I don't think it could solely be contributed to the fare dispute," Sergeant Cody Green of the Santa Monica police told City News Service.
