Letter from the Publisher

We need to hear from you.
Today during our spring member drive, put a dollar value on the trustworthy reporting you rely on all year long. The local news you read here every day is crafted for you, but right now, we need your help to keep it going. In these uncertain times, your support is even more important. We can't hold those in power accountable and uplift voices from the community without your partnership. Thank you.

Today marks the beginning of public beta for LAist.com. If all goes well, after a week or so we'll take off the beta label and launch the site officially. We're thrilled to be bringing the Gothamist brand of optimistic, city-centric blogging to the West Coast. Los Angeles means a lot to Gothamist- in fact, we're moving the whole Gothamist operation over to LA for two weeks in August, when one of us will be getting married there. We've spent a lot of time all over LA- downtown, in the Valley, in West Hollywood, up in Malibu, down in Culver City- the city never ceases to amaze us.

LAist is edited by the marvelous writer Tom Berman, a lifelong resident of Los Angeles who now splits his time between the two coasts. We've been working on the site for a couple of months in the dark, so we hope we've worked out the worst bugs- but as they say on the subway here in New York, "if you see something, say something!" And of course, we hope you will enjoy our site- if you like it, come again and tell your friends!
