LAist is driving around the country to promote literacy. Today we found ourself in Austin, a smattering of liberalism in a huge land of conservatism. Later we were driving north trying to get out of Dallas and we discovered that we were on President George Bush Freeway. It was amazingly creepy.

But Austin's motto is "Keep Austin Weird" so we did the weirdest thing we could which was find the most normal girl in town and have lunch with her at the Subway on Congress and then interview her in a parking garage so the wind wouldn't blow all over the mic. Best laid plans...

Anyways our month-long road trip is winding down and all we can say is Austin's famous 6th Street sure is nicer when it's not being gangbanged by out-of-towners during South By Southwest, and although it was muggy and hot the people seriously are funny and sweet and all the things you'd hope for when searching for Southern hospitality.

And yes, the music scene is amazing, as is the bar scene, as is the barbeque scene, and the people are just weird enough. Thumbs up. Now enjoy this "interview" with Leah who blogs here.
