According to the Los Angeles Times, Rudy Tomjanovich is the leading candidate to become the next coach of the Lakers. While Tomjanovich is no Phil Jackson, this is good news for Lakers fans. In today's NBA, there is no coaching job more strenuous and complex than the Lakers', and Jerry Buss could not get away with handing the keys to the franchise over to a less-experienced coach like Jim Cleamons, Kurt Rambis, or Brian Shaw.

Tomjanovich is simply the most credible coach available, now that Pat Riley has taken himself out of the running. Rudy T. (as he as affectionately known), has two championships with the Rockets and is beloved by everyone who has ever played for him, whether with Houston or Team USA. As long as he has fully recovered from bladder cancer, he's the best choice for the Lakers.

At this point, LAist will plead with Buss to make this hire as quickly as possible so that Gary Payton and Derek Fisher know whether to opt out or not, and so the Lakers can have a coach in place by Thursday's draft. While LAist is all for vacations, we'd like Buss to delay his flight to Italy if necessary to get the Rudy T deal done ASAP.
