Identity Crisis? City-County Boundaries Confuse SCV Residents

Folks who reside in the northern portion of Los Angeles County in the Santa Clarita Valley sometimes suffer a similar "Identity Crisis" to those who have trouble determining just what official City of Los Angeles Neighborhood they live in. A recent article in the Signal, the SCV paper, references to the commonality of residents who face "uncertainty about city-county boundaries."The lines are somewhat blurred because where you call home determines things like who your local political reps are, what elections you're expected to vote in, or what fees you're expected to pay for certain services. Mike Murphy, the city’s intergovernmental relations officer, explains the boundaries for the City of Santa Clarita, which are:
generally between the Highway 14 and Interstate 5, Ortiz said. The guidelines are generally Interstate 5 on the west, Highway 14 on the east, Copper Hill Drive on the north and approximately where I- 5 and the Highway 14 meet. [...] The unincorporated communities of Santa Clarita Valley include Castaic, Val Verde, Stevenson Ranch, West Ridge, Acton, Agua Dulce and Sunset Pointe.
Many residents of unincorporated areas feel they belong to the Santa Clarita community, although they are technically affiliated with Los Angeles County. It comes down to taking a moment to determine what jurisdiction your address falls under. According to Tony Bell, spokesman for Michael D. Antonovich, this is an example of “the basic civics lesson” which "is that everyone should be informed about their city, county, state and federal government."City of Los Angeles residents share that responsibility, particularly when it comes to voting, like in our most recent City elections. Of course, sometimes drawing the boundaries becomes a complex issue of history, emotions, and plain confusion, as the LA Times may have discovered. For people who call the Santa Clarita Valley home, things might be a little easier: Those wishing to figure out just where they belong when it comes to City-County, they can use this online database.
